The exam-day playbook

You've done the work. Exam day is about protecting that preparation — with rest, pacing, and a calm plan for the hard questions.

By the time you sit down, most of the outcome is already decided by your preparation. But how you handle the final 24 hours and the exam itself can still swing borderline results. This playbook keeps you from beating yourself with avoidable mistakes.

The night before

The morning of

During the exam: pacing

Note the total time and question count and set a rough pace (for example, a rough sense of where you should be at the halfway mark). Don't burn ten minutes on a single item early on. Banking every question you know first guarantees those points; the hard ones can wait.

Triage the hard questions

When a question stumps you, run a simple routine instead of freezing:

  1. Eliminate. Cross off answers you know are wrong — often you can get to a 50/50.
  2. Answer anyway. If there's no penalty for guessing, never leave it blank.
  3. Flag it. Mark it for review and move on before it drains your time and confidence.
  4. Return with fresh eyes. Later questions sometimes jog the answer, and a second look is calmer than a first panic.

Performance-based and scenario items

Some certification exams open with time-consuming performance-based questions (PBQs) — simulations or multi-step tasks. They can eat your clock if you let them. A common strategy: give each PBQ a fair first attempt, but if it's a black hole, flag it and secure the faster multiple-choice points first, then come back with your remaining time. Read scenario stems carefully and answer the question actually being asked, not the one you expected.

Keeping nerves in check

If anxiety spikes, pause for two slow breaths — a longer exhale than inhale settles the body's stress response. Remind yourself that you don't need a perfect score, only a passing one, and that you've already seen questions like these in practice. Preparation is the best anti-anxiety tool there is; test-day technique is just the finish.

One line to remember

Answer what you know, guess-and-flag what you don't, and come back. Momentum beats perfection.

After you submit

Many certification exams show a pass/fail result on the spot. However it goes, note what surprised you while it's fresh. Passed? Log the credential and line up the next one. Fell short? A failed attempt is data, not a verdict — target the weak domains and re-test. That's the deliberate-practice loop in action.

Frequently asked questions

Should I study the night before an exam?

A light review is fine, but late cramming at the cost of sleep usually hurts more than it helps. Sleep supports memory and attention, so prioritize rest over one more study hour.

What should I do when I hit a question I don't know?

Don't stall. Eliminate obviously wrong choices, make your best guess, flag the question, and move on. Come back with fresh eyes after you've banked the questions you do know.

How do I manage time during the exam?

Know the total time and question count, keep a rough pace, and handle time-consuming performance-based items strategically — some test-takers flag them and return after securing the quicker multiple-choice points.
